Kane Garden

Kane Garden Surfboards is a San Diego based company that is dedicated to designing and building high quality surfboards in the tradition of Southern California's hot-rod car culture and craftsmanship. Led by owner/surfer/designer PJ Johnson we have been quietly building surfboards for years in the San Diego area and have been at the forefront of the fish design since the very beginning. San Diego is a fertile wave-field with every type of surf you could imagine and this has allowed us to build a line of surfboards that are unique, technical, and practical with an emphasis on strength and durability. Our surfboards come in many shapes and designs and we have an experienced team of craftsman that insure our customers are getting the best quality and value for their hard-earned money! Kane Garden Surfboards are California Hot Rods with advanced hydrodynamic design features that are field-tested by our team of hard-core wave riders to insure every board we build is fast, high-performance, and has plenty of paddle power! Kane Garden Surfboards is about getting the most out of your surfing experience and we build the boards to make it happen.

Industry

The entire business model for our industry changed radically when Clark Foam closed down. The emphasis on surfboards in the stores shifted from the 'custom surfboard' to the more 'model orientated' philosophy and price point boards, this shift in turn allowed the 'overseas' boards to gain a solid foothold in the industry at that time. This made us very aware of the importance of our models needing to be precisely tuned in as well as our customers awareness of our design features. Our top-selling models are the Sea Viper, the Nautilus, and the Orca, followed closely by the Kingfish. All of our fish models are designed to excel in a wide range of surf and conditions. People are drawn to these designs because they are effortless to ride, look great, and are built to last. These high performance designs work well in marginal conditions but excels as the surf improves; they are easy to paddle, very stable, yet fighter-jet fast! That translates into blazing, section-making speed with precise turning and incredible maneuverability!

The Roots

Kane Garden Surfboards was founded in San Diego as a local surfboard company which grew into an internationally recognized brand in the 2000's. Our philosophy was simple; build the best quality surfboards using innovative practical designs that would work well in average conditions but excel as the surf got better! As one of the original owners, PJ Johnson has been working in the action sports industry and building surfboards for most of his life. In the early 2000's PJ brought in a small team of shaping talent that worked together on an old late 60's San Diego design known as the fish and revamped this incredibly versatile design into a line of innovative high-performance surfboards with a classic look and modern day design features. Our take on the fish pushed Kane Garden Surfboards into the limelight with the reintroduction of the fish back into the surfing world on a larger scale with our many innovative models, hot-rod pin-lines and color schemes. We have recognized all the original innovators of the fish design along the way which includes Bear Mirandon, Steve Lis, Jeff Ching, Skip Frye, John Belik and many other influential San Diego designer/shapers. Led by Steve Lis's futuristic fish design, which he developed in the late sixties, each shaper has had his own original take on this innovative design and we ran with ours!

The Fish

The Fish was always a mainstay surfboard design for a hard-core group of San Diego surfers since the early seventies and they rode and fine-tuned the design through each era and never really got off these boards. We worked hard on some of the quirky aspects of the fish and fine-tuned the board into a versatile high-performance machine. The Fish is now is universally accepted and a renowned design world-wide with people just now really starting to see how versatile these board designs really are (if it is built correctly). Kane Garden Surfboards was never a follower of trends and we were always fully committed to the fish and pushing the design to its limits. We have never been content with the status-quo and are always experimenting and working on improving our boards! The models we have now are some of our best work yet!!!

PJ Johnson, Owner / Surfer / Designer

"I started surfing in the summer of 1964 and began working on surfboards when I was twelve years old fixing dings and cutting down and reshaping old longboards during the frenzied period of the shortboard revolution. We surfed everyday and my friends and I were always excited about all the new design innovations happening during this time period! It was a high-energy environment with changes happening literally everyday so we got to see this revolution unfold before our very eyes! Some of my older cousin(s) were surfers and builders in one of the old factories in Southern San Diego so we were always seeing some of the most innovative boards of that time coming out of the factory, sometimes days after the design ideas were conceived. It was a very exciting time to be a young surfer!"

Our Design Philosophy

Kane Garden surfboards is not a retro surfboard company, we are a forward thinking and futuristic company and brand. We build very high quality and practical high-performance surfboards, innovative and post-modern. We constantly work on developing new board designs. We continually evaluate and fine tune all of our surfboard models. "The look of our boards were founded in the Southern California roots of the classic car culture, so we embraced hot-rod colors and pin-lines as the signature look of our brand. We practice what we preach, our extensive experience building and developing new surfboards designs goes all the way back to the late sixties, owner/designer PJ Johnson was born and raised in San Diego and is one of the few that continued to ride, design and build fishes to this day.
